Words About Our Work
At We Grow Food, the heart of our work is reflected in the people who learn, grow, and gather with us. From first-time gardeners to long-time volunteers, our community members share inspiring stories about how our gardens, programs, and hands-on learning have made a difference in their lives. Here are some of their testimonials.
Highly Engaging
I wanted to thank you again for coming to our school and working with our Eco-Club. The “We Grow Food” workshop had a wonderful impact on our students in Grades 3–8. They were highly engaged throughout the sessions and especially enjoyed the practical, hands-on learning. The students learned so much about planting a garden, the different types of vegetables, flowers, and herbs, and how and where they grow best. Planting their own seeds in pots was a meaningful experience, and many of them are already excited to watch their seedlings grow.We are also very grateful for the two large cedar planters you provided. Our Eco-Club is looking forward to planting in them this spring, with your guidance. The wooden pieces you brought for the students were another highlight, they are excited to paint them and display their artwork on the planters.Overall, the program has sparked a genuine interest in gardening and environmental stewardship among our students. It gave them both knowledge and confidence, and we truly appreciate the positive impact it has had.Thank you again for sharing your time and expertise with us.
We Loved Working With The We Grow Food Team
Waverly Public School had the honour of working on a garden bed project with Carol and Michelle from We Grow Food in the Spring of 2022. Over the two days, 150 of our students had the opportunity to learn about seed saving, to help build the garden beds, and to fill and plant the beds. Our students also worked with an artist to design and paint signs to personalize the garden beds. Our students are taking great pride in what they worked to create, taking time over the summer to visit the garden beds.
We were able to invite our community to help themselves to the herbs and vegetables we were growing, and many of the families have commented on how much they appreciate having the gardens available to them. Through the process, our students had the opportunity to think deeper about sustainability and environmental stewardship, developing a connection with the land. We loved working with the We Grow Food team and we hope to continue this partnership. We have lots of ideas for expanding our garden and reaching more students and families.
The Power of Ripple Effect
Thank you for bringing the incredible We Grow Food edible garden project to our school! Our students learned so much throughout the day. The numerous benefits from this program will certainly impact our students well beyond this special day.
One of the shy students in our club quietly told me at the end of the day, “I’m glad I joined this club.”
I believe this image (below) represents what you have done after teaching our students. Your awesome program has sent ripples out to our students’ environment. Who knows how far this knowledge will take our kids. Thank you again for this valuable training. Our students are very enthusiastic about caring for our gardens!

Grateful for This Addition to Our Outdoor Learning Space
On May 25th 2022, in partnership with We Grow Food, our grade 8 students built this incredible community garden. They planted beautiful tomatoes, peppers, herbs, lettuce, beans, and more. Our students also created artistic signs to decorate our garden with phrases like “Plant More, Waste Less” and “Grow Food!” On the same day, our grade 3 students learned to harvest seeds from fruits and vegetables to create our very own seed library to use in future years. Our plan is to use this garden year after year to teach and learn about plants, food sustainability, and our earth. We hope that our students, past, present, and future, as well as their families, will enjoy this addition to our outdoor learning space. During the summer months, our garden is cared for by family volunteers. Now that September is here, our student are so excited to join our Garden Club as well as use the space around the garden for outdoor learning.
